Stoptober, the UK's largest mass quit smoking challenge, returns for its 13th year this October, providing thousands of smokers across the country with the tools, support, and motivation they need to quit for good. Backed by the NHS and Public Health England, the 28-day challenge is designed to help smokers give up cigarettes during the month of October and embrace a healthier, smoke-free future.

Stoptober has proven to be one of the most successful public health campaigns in the UK, with over 2 million people having made quit attempts since its launch. Research shows that smokers who quit for 28 days are five times more likely to stop smoking for good.

What’s New for Stoptober 2024?

This year, Stoptober will introduce several new features to support smokers in their quit journey and these include:

  • Alternative Therapies: To encourage more smokers to participate, Stoptober 2024 will promote a range of alternative quitting methods including nicotine replacement therapies (NRT), e-cigarettes, and prescription medications, helping individuals find the strategy that works best for them.

The Importance of quitting

Smoking remains the leading cause of preventable death in the UK, contributing to a range of health issues such as lung cancer, heart disease, and respiratory illnesses. Quitting not only improves physical health but can also lead to improved mental well-being, reduced anxiety, and better financial stability.

Dr Ed Capo-Bianco, a GP and Clinical lead for Urgent Care, Palliative and End of Life Care and Cardiovascular Disease in Oxfordshire place for BOB ICB says:

“As part of Stoptober campaign, this October is a great opportunity to stop smoking. Stopping smoking is the number one lifestyle change that will significantly reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease, which includes heart attacks and strokes. It will also reduce your risk for a variety of cancers as well as increasing the money in your pocket.”
